Have you experienced the joy of staying in a comfortable and stylish guest bedroom and would like to replicate it? A well-designed guest bedroom provides a restful retreat and speaks volumes of your hospitality. At JK King Homes we understand the value of a beautiful and functional guest bedroom.

Your Guest Bedroom Design

There are four key components when it comes to the design of your Guest Bedroom:

1. The Bedroom Area

This is the area of the room itself, excluding the robe and ensuite. For a comfortable space, you should be seeking a minimum 3m x 3m room (9m2 in total). This is an industry standard, with anything bigger than this being a bonus that can allow additional opportunities to furnish the room. Having the space for a study desk can always come in handy for your guests, especially if they are seeking to do work in their own private space.

It is also important to consider how you want to furnish the bedroom area. Most guest bedrooms are traditionally furnished with a bed and bedside tables, if your guest bedroom is a 3m x 3m space, the only key decision you have to make is the size of the bed relative to the size of the room. In this case, a double bed would fit the room well allowing space for other furnishing. The bigger the bed, the less room around it.

2. Cupboard and Storage

Storage space in your guest bedroom is a must. As a bare minimum, you want to provide a robe, which is more than enough for most guests. They traditionally have a hanging rail and ample space underneath. The cupboard area can be separate from the bedroom itself so as to not compromise your bedroom set-up arrangements.

If you do happen to find a guest bedroom with a walk-in robe, (WIR as depicted on most plans), this is an added bonus and will more than comfortably cater for your guests' storage needs

3. Bathroom and Ensuite

When it comes to your bathroom there are 3 parts, a shower, toilet and basin. This really depends on the size of the home. Sometimes not all three elements can be delivered due to challenging lot sizes simply not allowing all three components to be designed into a home. At JG King Homes we ensure that where a guest bedroom exists, that same level will feature a shower to avoid you having to traipse across floors

4. Location of the Guest Bedroom in a Double Storey Home

The bedroom will either be on the ground level or the first level. If you had a choice, the preference would always be to have the guest bedroom on the ground level. Obviously this is in the perfect world. The point is simple, it allows anyone to stay in the room, no matter their mobility! Also, from a design perspective, it makes more sense to have your own family upstairs in a double storey, and your guests on a separate level. This simplifies everything

Create a Comfortable Atmosphere

Creating a cosy atmosphere is key to making your guests feel at home. Start with high-quality bedding—soft sheets, plush pillows, and a warm blanket to transform any guest bedroom. Layer your lighting options; use bedside lamps for soft illumination and dimmable overhead lights for versatility. Add warm tones and soothing scents to create a relaxing ambience. Comfort should be your top priority when brainstorming bedroom ideas for guest rooms.

Maximise Space and Functionality

Making the most of the space will improve your guest bedroom, especially if the room is small. Smart storage solutions like under-bed drawers or built-in shelving can help keep clutter at bay. Try dual-purpose furniture, such as a sofa bed or an ottoman that doubles as storage, to maximise functionality. An open layout can also make the room more spacious, effective, and welcoming.

Decorate with Style

You don’t need to turn yourself into knots to decorate guest bedrooms. Choose a decor theme that works with your home’s overall style — modern, rustic, or eclectic. Incorporate artwork and accessories that reflect local culture or taste. Soft rugs, decorative cushions, and interesting wall art can add personality and warmth. Remember, the goal is to make the bedroom guest feel special and looked after.

Keep it Neutral but Inviting

Lean into neutral colours for a calming backdrop. Shades of beige, grey, or soft pastels can make the room feel spacious and light. Then boost the room’s warmth with accent pillows, throws, or curtains in richer colours. Use colours and furnishings that are easy to maintain and update. Also, most importantly, neutral colours ensure the space is calming helping your guest to have a good night's sleep.

Add Personal Touches

Everyone loves a personal touch like quality toiletries, fresh towels, or a bottle of wine. Add these or local artwork to make your guest bedroom extra charming and the experience of staying in special.

Ensure Privacy and Comfort

It's important to respect your guest's privacy. Invest in quality window treatments for your guest bedroom that offer light control and discretion. Heavy drapes or blackout blinds can aid a restful night’s sleep.
