JG King Homes and 7-Star Energy Efficiency Standards
7-star energy efficiency standards for new homes will become mandatory in Victoria on May 1, 2024. JG King Homes is taking the exceptional step of providing these benefits to its customers earlier. From December 4, 2023, all JG King Homes standard designs will comply with 7-Star energy efficiency, allowing customers to experience the benefits of a more energy-efficient home sooner.
7-Star Energy Efficiency Standards
In August 2022, the Victorian Government announced an increase in minimum energy efficiency standards for new homes from 6 to 7 stars under changes to National Construction Code (NCC) 2022. With millions of homes planned for the next 30 years, the NCC requirements will help future-proof our nation and keep pace with environmental leaders in Europe.
The minimum standards for thermal comfort in new homes will increase from 6 to 7 stars for energy efficiency (NatHERS ratings) under changes to the NCC, effective from May 1, 2024.
What Are The Benefits of a 7-Star Energy-Efficient Homes?
Choosing a 7-Star compliant JG King Home allows customers to future-proof their homes.
Building a more energy-efficient home affords you the following benefits:
- Lower energy costs: Higher star ratings means reduced energy costs and lower energy bills. This means saving money on energy bills from day one.
- Greater comfort: A higher NatHERS rating improves thermal performance, resulting in a more comfortable living environment throughout the year.
- Increased resilience to temperature conditions: Victoria experiences both cold and warm months throughout the year. A 7-Star home ensures a more comfortable temperature in extreme heat or cold compared to a 6-Star home.
- Reduced emissions: Energy-efficient homes contribute to achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. The long-term savings on energy costs saving homeowners money, and help reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
How are JG King Homes Achieving 7-Star Energy Efficiency Compliance?
JG King Homes employs the following unique combination to achieve compliance:
- European-styled (uPVC) double-glazed windows and doors.
- Double Glazed Windows and Low-E glass coating helping reduce energy consumption and lower energy bills.
- Assistance in house sitting (home orientation) to maximise passive heating in winter and shading in summer.
- Increased insulation.
JG King Homes is in a unique position where we are committed to ensuring all home orientations, in all geographical locations throughout Victoria (except Mildura) we will be able to achieve compliance with all our standard house plans.
What Are European Styled (uPVC) Windows And Doors, And What Are Their Benefits?
Unplasticised polyvinyl chloride (uPVC) is a strong, durable material used for window and door frames. The majority of windows in Europe (80%) and the USA are made from uPVC.
With the introduction of JG King Homes' European-style double-glazed windows and doors along with double glazing and Low-E coating as standard, JG King Homes deliver the following benefits:
- Saving on energy bills from day one.
- Energy efficiency: Significant reduction in energy transfer, with windows accounting for up to 40% of a home's heat loss or gain when comparing low quality to high quality windows.
- Durability: Long-lasting, even in harsh conditions.
- Security: Multi-point locks and reinforced frames. Deterrent against potential intruders.
- Customisation: A variety of styles, colours, and finishes.
- Condensation control: Preventing moisture-related issues.
- Environmental benefits: Reducing energy consumption and being recyclable
- High acoustic insulation: Significantly diminishing outside noise for a quieter home.
- Fire safety: Fire-resistant and Bal-40 approved.
- Low maintenance: Quick and easy to clean.
- Thermal performance: Maintaining a comfortable indoor environment throughout the year.
- UV Protection: Blocking harmful UV rays to safeguard interiors.
At Project Windows and Doors (PW&D) (Part of the JG King Building Group), innovation is ingrained in our DNA. Our latest breakthrough in windows and doors introduces the exceptional uPVC frames with Aluplast technology as standard inclusion in all JG King Homes.
Are There Differences Between uPVC and Other Window Types?
uPVC has many advantages over timber and aluminium, including being energy-efficient, low maintenance, noise-stopping, colour-fast, UV resistant and more secure. See table below:

What to Ask A Home Builder When Considering a 7-Star Compliant Home?
When considering a 7-Star energy-efficient home, ask your home builder:
- If they provide you the option to buy a preferred home design as a 7-Star compliant home before May 1st 2024.
- If they can deliver any home and land combination to achieve 7-Star energy-efficient rating, considering different block orientations.
- Whether windows sizes and locations have been compromised adjusted for energy compliance.
At JG King Homes, no compromises have been taken to deliver a 7-Star energy-efficient home; home designs remain unchanged.
