Steel framing has many advantages over timber... it’s hard to understand why anyone would choose timber once you know the benefits.

Over 35 years ago, JG King Homes made the choice to build new homes exclusively with Australian made Truecore® steel frames and Colorbond® steel roofs. Today, we are Victoria’s largest builder of steel frame homes, and as a family-owned company, we understand the importance of building an unrivalled home.

Stronger, straighter and built to last, steel frame homes consistently prove to be the superior choice.

Discover The Benefits Of Steel Framed Houses:

1. Stronger & Straighter

When built from timber, your home can visibly flex and warp over time. But steel gives your home a straighter finish because its weight to strength ratio beats any other building material.

The consequence of warped timber frame homes is that plaster can ripple. And due to moisture and expansion, nails could start popping out of walls.

Steel won’t split, warp or swell along roofs, ceilings and walls, which means you won’t have plasterboards cracking or your doors and windows jamming.

Steel also won’t deteriorate over time like timber does, helping to prevent catastrophic structural failures and creating generations of liveability.

Similarly, steel frame homes in Victoria better resist storm and wind damage in our harsh environment.

Truecore® steel has a blue resin surface finish that gives our frames their bright and distinct blue colour.

This is patented Activate® coating technology which provides enhanced corrosion resistance.

2. Fire Resistant

Timber framed homes are vulnerable to fire and extreme heat, as we have seen with the various bushfire tragedies that have occurred across Victoria.

Not only do our steel frames achieve a Bushfire Attack Level (BAL) of 12.5, steel is also non-combustible and won’t add further fuel to fires.

Ember proof frames reduce the speed of a fire spreading through a home or community.

While some timber products come with a good fire rating, they still degrade overtime.

Steel however maintains it’s qualities giving you peace of mind now and into the future.

Just like our James Hardie Cladding, our Truecore® steel gives you great fire protection.

After a bushfire, steel framing can mean the difference between fixing your home or rebuilding it entirely.

And if you’re worried about lightning, never fear. Steel creates a positive earth, allowing the energy to enter the ground and dissipate.

Steel frames help minimise lightning damage.

3. Termite Proof

Termites are known as the ‘silent destroyer’, usually undetected, eating away at the depths of your home until it’s too late.

With an estimated one in five homes affected by termites in Victoria (CSIRO).

While treated timber can be termite resistant, it requires the use of harsh toxins and chemicals, and deteriorates overtime.

One of the greatest benefits of steel framed houses, is that they are 100% termite and borer proof.

Steel framing provides a lifetime guarantee against termites destroying your home without any harsh chemicals and toxins!

4. Sustainable

It’s estimated that 22 pine trees are logged to make a timber frame home. But steel frames require no deforestation at all.

This helps lower carbon emissions and promote clean air.

Also, steel recycling creates less landfill waste.

Steel is 100% recyclable and our Truecore® steel frames are already made from 40% recycled material.

5. Cost effective

Steel framed housing helps you cut costs during the building stage and in the years afterwards.

While timber may appear to be the cheaper building material, steel can be lighter and easier for tradespeople to carry and assemble, which indirectly helps to cut building costs.

After your steel frame home is built, it will last a lifetime through its termite and fire resistant qualities.

You can even expect savings of up to $30,000 while not having to keep termites at bay.

When you consider all the benefits you get from steel compared to timber framing, steel offers better value for your money in the long term.
